Individualized Family Support – Get the Resources You Need
As parents, we want the best for our children. Yet, it can be difficult navigating through both your and your child’s needs, especially if doing it alone. With everything that goes on in your day-to-day life, it’s important to know it is okay to ask for help.
Nebraska Children’s Home Society provides programs for new parents to help them reach their personal ambitions while also offering access to the resources their children need.
Self-Sufficiency Support from NCHS
Our self-sufficiency program provides voluntary home visitation services to parents and kinship caregivers. We are here for you! The program provides flexible one-on-one services so that participants can meet their goals, access resources, and make progress towards wellbeing.
Self-Sufficiency Support Aims To:
- Increase the strength and resilience of families
- Support parents as they help their children reach their full potential
- Teach parents how to develop strong and secure relationships with their children
- Remove barriers in accessing healthcare and prenatal support
- Provide resources on child development, family goal planning, and educational services
Our Approach
We provide home visiting services through The Healthy Families America® (HFA) so that all children receive nurturing care from their family that leads to a healthy, long, and successful life. Within our home visitation programs, a trained Family Resource Specialist (FRS) provides weekly home visits where parents learn about the development of their child, from before birth through their fifth birthday. The specialist will also support each family’s goals and connect them with resources in the community to meet their needs.
HFA works by providing a strong connection with the families being served, learning about their individualized needs, and always providing voluntary enrollment. Services are culturally respectful, and home visitors are chosen on the basis of their ability to establish trusting relationships with participating families.
There is no “one-size-fits-all” approach when it comes to self-sufficient care, so each family is supported in a unique, individualized way. This conceptualizes in ways such as parent education, whether with local classes or simply having a safe space to talk. Family Resource Specialists will also help parents to bond with their children as well as make sure they are attending routine doctor appointments.
Who We Serve
This program serves low-income women aged 19 or older who are living in Douglas County and are pregnant or have children under 5.
We also provide a Teen & Young Parent program that serves pregnant and parenting teens, and young adults ages 25 and younger, residing anywhere within the Omaha metro area, including Bellevue and Council Bluffs.
